A "sub-standard performance" was how boss Maurice Malpas explained his sides disappointing loss to Colchester.

The game was littered with poor defensive mistakes from the home side that were punished by the visitors - with both former Town loanee Johnny Jackson and striker Scott Vernon on hand to capitalise and give Colchester a 2-0 lead going into the half-time break.

A double substitution at the start of the second-half breathed some life into a lacklustre Town side, who got themselves back in the game with a Simon Cox penalty just before the hour mark.

However, it was to no avail as a further defensive mix-up allowed substitute Sunday Wasiu to easily slot home late on to give his side all three points.

"Today wasn't good enough, we have set ourselves high standards and we didn't get anywhere close to them today," commented Malpas after the game.

"I will have to go away and have a look and the necessary changes will be made before next week against the MK Dons," added the boss.
